Shenandoah National Park Backpacking List for the Different Seasons

Home » Shenandoah National Park Backpacking List for the Different Seasons

Contents

Shenandoah National Park is one of the famous places in Virginia, USA. Established in 1935, the park has had over 1.2 million visitors thanks to variety of attractions that one can enjoy while there. These include the skyline drive, backcountry camping, lodging, waterfalls, horseback riding, and hiking trails. If you enjoy any of these activities as I do, then you should plan a visit.

My name is Eddie and hiking has been my hobby for as long as I can remember. The good news is that if you have your annual national park pass that can be bought from the National Park Service website, your entrance charges into Shenandoah are covered. The pass costs $80 for adults annually while it is free for fourth graders if you are taking a student with you. The other thing you need to know is what to pack for your trip. If you have been wondering what to bring to the Shenandoah National Park whether, in the summer/spring or winter, this list may put your confusion to rest.

Packing List for Shenandoah National Park in the Spring or Summer

Shenandoah National Park

Spring and summer are quite warm seasons in the Shenandoah National Park. On average, they are characterized by temperatures ranging between 13˚C and 20˚C. This happens between May and October. Therefore, if your planned trip dates to the Shenandoah National Park during these warm seasons, there are some specific things that you will need to pack.

Light Clothing

If the thought of what to wear to Shenandoah National Park has crossed your mind, then I would advise you to wear and pack light clothing. For example, pack some shorts, light T-shirts and socks. In addition, ensure that you pack very light undergarments that dry out quickly in case you need to change and wash them.

You will also need to pack the right type of shoes for the activity in which you intend to engage. For example, if you plan to hike, pack some sturdy hiking shoes. Alternatively, if you plan to go horseback riding, then consider packing some leather boots.

Shenandoah National Park Hiking Gear for the Spring/Summer

When hiking through the Shenandoah National Park, your gear must include the following items:

  • Water and food

You will need more water during the warm weather. I would recommend at least 6 liters per day. You should also avoid drinking water directly from any streams before purifying it. Besides water, you need some food or snacks during your hike. Remember that a hike could drain a lot of your energy. You need to keep your body energies high enough.

  • A map

The Shenandoah National Park covers a vast area. Therefore, apart from following the trail blaze, use a map that will guide you right into your preferred activity.

This should come in handy in case of injuries or accidents during the hike. It should contain the essential elements.

Personal Items

Shenandoah National Park Backpacking List

Regardless of the kind of activity, you choose to engage in at the Shenandoah National Park, you must not leave out your items. These include things like:

  • Toilet paper
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses
  • Wipes
  • Moisturizers

These are important, especially in warm weather where your body is more exposed to the sun. These items will protect you from the sunrays.

Camera and Binoculars

This National Park is home to a variety of wildlife species including birds and mammals. Therefore, if you enjoy wildlife, you need to pack a pair of binoculars and your camera for maximum wildlife viewing pleasure. The animals in this park are accustomed to cars and people and can be seen just about anywhere. Watch out for them, especially at night on the roads.

Horseback Riding Gear

Horseback riding is another activity that attracts people to the Shenandoah National Park. If you intend to undertake this activity when visiting during the summer or spring, you will need to pack some things for this. These include safety gear and riding shoes and clothes.

Your safety gear should include a helmet and a safety vest. As for your riding clothes, pack a pair of pants. This could be well-fitting jeans or khaki pants. In addition, pack a light shirt and a pair of riding gloves. Most importantly, pack a pair of boots that are intended for use in horseback riding. These will provide ankle stability and traction for riding.

Safety Gear

Some other visitors go to the Shenandoah National Park for backcountry camping. If you intend to go camping here, ensure that you pack some items that will ensure an exceptional outdoor experience. They include:

If you own none of these items, you might consider renting them instead of buying new ones. Also, when camping at the Shenandoah National Park, beware of wildlife such as venomous snakes and bears.

Shenandoah National Park Packing List for Winter

Shenandoah National Park

I have been to the Shenandoah National Park during winter, and it was a time when the park landscape explodes with beautiful fall foliage. However, during this season, temperatures were quite low. Sometimes they dropped to -6˚C. This is why I would advise you to pack more specialized gear when visiting between November and March.

If you are backpacking across the Shenandoah National Park, you should pack items that make this activity easier. I would recommend a safety gear containing the items I have described for the summer/spring season be part of your backpacking list

In addition, you should include food and water in your backpack during the winter. Do not forget essential personal items like the ones I have stated. Remember that you will require necessities like sunscreen even in winter as the sun can still burn. Moreover, do not leave out your sunglasses as they could help in protecting your eyes if it becomes too windy or sunny.

Warm Clothing

Shenandoah National Park in winter

The most important thing you must bring is warm clothing. Your body needs to retain as much heat as possible during the cold season. If you are underdressed when visiting the Shenandoah National Park in winter, you risk having hypothermia and frostbite, which could lower your body’s immune system.

Furthermore, you should strive to keep your body dry at all times during winter. This is why you should avoid packing clothes made of cotton fabrics because they tend to absorb moisture in this case, your body’s sweat. Instead, consider clothes made of woolen or synthetic fabrics.

Another pointer for packing clothes for visiting a park during winter is two layers. The first one should be comprised of clothes that are worn closest to the skin. They should be made of a thin fabric and be breathable. The second layer should be comprised of clothes that insulate your body while the third are those that protect you from the rain or wind. For example, raincoats, gloves, and hats. In addition, ensure that these clothes are not tight to avoid poor blood circulation.

What to Pack for Hiking during the Winter

Hiking in this park during winter can be an enjoyable adventure if you pack the right gear. One of the items you should not forget is a headlamp. You may have fewer daylight hours in extremely cold conditions. Therefore, you should be prepared to hike in low light conditions. Do not forget to carry extra batteries for your headlamp.

Also, you should pack snowshoes for your hiking trail gets icy. This footgear also needs to be lightweight, warm, and waterproof. Your hiking gear should also be comprised of extra clothes, food, and water. Furthermore, you should pack other necessities like navigation tools, waterproof matches, a whistle, and a survival kit. Your survival kit may include items like:

Sometimes during winter, the Shenandoah National Park experiences some rain. Therefore, you need to ensure that your backpack has a built-in rain cover. Remember that you will have carried delicate items like your camera in your backpack. The rain cover will protect these items during the winter hike.

What to Pack for the Shenandoah National Park Adventure

A visit to Shenandoah Park is a worthy one. I have been there during different weather seasons. In the fall, for example, the leaves’ colors keep changing, and this makes a drive through the park worthwhile. Well, this list has exhausted the basic items you need to pack for your trip whether you schedule it during spring/summer or winter. What I should emphasize is that you should beware of wildlife, especially when camping. Other than that, your visit should be an enjoyable one. Have you been to the Shenandoah National Park? What did you pack for your trip? Did my list leave out any other essentials?
