Black Voyage Zephyr vs. Aero – Which Vacuum Compression Backpack Should You Buy?

When it comes to packing smart, not all vacuum seal backpacks are created equal.

I’ve been using the Black Voyage Aero and Airback for the past year and it’s been a game changer. They helped me cut down on luggage fees, pack more in less space, and glide through airports stress-free. I’ve written a comparison article comparing both backpacks here: How Black Voyage Aero compares with Airback.

But then Black Voyage released the Zephyr, a newer model from Black Voyage. Naturally, I had to try it out to see how it compared. And after taking it on multiple trips—short weekend getaways and longer international flights— I can say this: if you love the Aero, you’ll probably fall even harder for the Zephyr.

  • Key differences include zippers, fabric, suitcase strap, weight distribution tech, anti-theft compartment, design, and foldable straps.

Our Overall Pick

Comparing the Key Differences

Since most features of both backpacks are identical, we’ll only compare the key differences.

1. Waterproof vs Water-Resistant– Zephyr Wins

One of the biggest functional upgrades you get with the Zephyr is waterproof zippers and fabric. They’re super sleek, they seal better, and they give me way more peace of mind when I’m traveling in unpredictable weather (hello, monsoon seasons).

Zephyr’s zippers are covered with additional fabric.

By contrast, the Aero has water-resistant zippers and fabric, which still do a decent job, but it still retains some moisture that needs to be left to dry.

If you’re going to places where downpours are common, or you just want the premium touch—Zephyr is the one.

2. Luggage Strap Orientation – Zephyr Wins

This was a huge deal for me.

The Aero has a vertical luggage strap, which means when you attach it to your rolling suitcase, it sits sideways. Not a big issue at first, but I noticed things fall out when I unzip the top front compartment—especially when I need my charger or headphones mid-transit.

The Zephyr, on the other hand, has a horizontal luggage strap—so when it’s on your suitcase, it stays upright. Way more intuitive, way more practical.

The Zephyr (right) has a horizontal luggage strap, which I personally prefer.

The only thing I think Zephyr can improve on is that the luggage strap is a bit tight, making it hard to slide it into the luggage handle. On the flipside, because of the tight strap, the backpack holds very steady and doesn’t easily slide around when your carrying it on your luggage.

3. Removable Hip Belt & Ergonomic Support – Zephyr Wins Again

After carrying the Zephyr fully packed for 2+ hours across multiple airports, I felt way less sore than I expected. Why? Because of the removable hip belt, adjustable shoulder straps, and sternum strap. All of them work together to evenly distribute the weight and eliminate that pressure point right between your shoulders.

If you don’t know what weight distribution is, this video helps explain.

The Aero is comfortable, no doubt—but it doesn’t have the full weight-distribution setup. If you tend to carry heavier loads or walk long distances, this feature alone might justify upgrading to the Zephyr.

4. Anti-Theft Compartment – Zephyr Wins for Security

Both backpacks have secure compartments, but the Zephyr takes it to another level.

It has a MUCH larger anti-theft pocket hidden right against the center of your back, which makes it practically inaccessible to pickpockets. It’s perfect for keeping your passport, wallet, or other valuables (even top-secret documents!) safe in crowded places.

The anti-theft compartment for the Zephyr is the entire back of the backpack – huge when compared with the Aero.

I personally find this design smarter and safer—especially when I’m traveling solo or through busy train stations.

5. Foldable Shoulder Straps – Zephyr Wins for Storage

Here’s a detail I didn’t know I needed until I had it.

The Zephyr’s shoulder straps are foldable, which means you can tuck them in neatly when stashing the backpack in the overhead bin or under an airplane seat. No dangling straps getting caught or getting dirty.

The Aero doesn’t have this feature, so you kind of have to maneuver the straps every time you want to compress it for tight spaces.

6. Design – Personal Preference, but I Prefer Zephyr

I like clean, minimal design—and the Zephyr’s one-panel front is just… smoother. The Aero’s fold in the middle breaks up the look a bit.

This comes down to personal taste, but the Zephyr just feels sleeker and more modern to me.

What I’d Choose If I Were You

If you’re on a tighter budget or only take short trips without a heavy load, the Aero is still a solid pick. You get Black Voyage’s vacuum compression system, great storage compartments, and sleek aesthetics.

But if you’re looking for weight distribution, better protection (security and water-proof), and smart design upgrades—the Zephyr is the clear winner.

My Favorite

Black Voyage Zephyr Zephyr – 60L Vortex Vacuum-Seal Air Compression Travel Backpack

– Pack effortlessly with vacuum seal compression
– Stay organized with 15 specialized compartments
– Designed for carry-on luggage while flexible for everyday use

Personally, I love the cleaner exterior (no central fold), the horizontal strap for luggage stacking, the large hidden pocket, and the waterproof zippers and fabric.

Go with the Zephyr if:

  • You don’t like Aero’s fold in the middle and want a cleaner look.
  • You want the best Black Voyage has to offer, with waterproof zippers and fabric.
  • You’re prioritize weight distribution for heavier or for longer trips.
  • You want the extra security of a large, centered anti-theft compartment.
  • You want a backpack that sits upright on your luggage.
